Jacquelyne Walter is now blazing a trail in her bid to become the first Kenyan woman to become a PGA Member

THE INSPIRATION

Orphaned at a young age but determined to forge her own path in life

Jacquelyne Walter is pursuing her dream to become a fully qualified PGA Professional. The Vipingo Ridge PGA Academy talent, now working at Data Driven Golf at Karen Country Club in Nairobi, is undertaking the three-year PGA Foundation Degree through the University of Birmingham and spent time at The Belfry in December.

Having already made her mark as a player, featuring on the Ladies European Tour, she harbours ambitions of becoming a respected coach.

With that goal in mind, she has the example of Director of Instruction at the Data Driven Golf Performance Saleem Haji, himself a PGA Pro and mentor to Jacky, to follow.

We spoke with Jacky to find out more about what motivated her and why she loves the game of golf...

Hitting that first ball was like unlocking a whole new world of possibilities

How early on did you develop the idea of pursuing a career in golf?

Pursuing golf as a career was a gradual process for me. In 2019, when I started golf, it started as a passion and hobby, and as I improved and dedicated more time to the game, the idea of making it a career started to form.

What is it about the sport that has drawn you in?

Golf has this special charm that just hooks me every time. It's the excitement of nailing that perfect shot, the mental challenge of each round and the serenity of being surrounded by the nature on the course that truly captivates me.

Can you describe the feeling the first time you hit a golf ball?

Hitting that first ball was like unlocking a whole new world of possibilities. Even now, every swing brings back a bit of that initial excitement, reminding me why I fell in love with the game of golf.

Did your start in life provide lessons and values that you apply to your approach to golf?

Growing up I learned the importance of dedication, perseverance and always striving to improve from my early experiences.

What have your golfing highlights been to date?

One of my biggest highlights has definitely been getting invited to play on the Ladies European Tour twice – they were such amazing experiences. The level of competition was intense and I loved every moment of it. This really inspired me to keep pushing my game and strive for even more in the future. Some other golfing highlights include getting an unforgettable hole in one, playing and getting great scores, hitting perfect long drives and sinking some long putts.

What are your ambitions as a player?

This goes beyond just improving my game. I want to compete at a higher level, but I also dream of being a mentor for the voiceless kids. I know it would be amazing to share my love for the sport with them and help them find their passion.

Jacky's three key ingredients for success

1) Dedication – always be willing to put in practice and effort

2) Patience – you have to be able to work through ups and downs

3) Positive mindset – this helps in staying motivated and focused

When did you decide to apply for the UK PGA course and how did you feel when you were successful?

I decided to apply for the PGA Training Programme in September 2023. When I received the unconditional offer, I felt an incredible rush of excitement and relief.

What are you looking forward to about the course?

To deep-dive into the technical aspects of the game and learn from the experienced professionals. Also, to gain practical skills that I can apply on the course and in coaching.

What do you hope the course will give you?

I hope it will give me a solid understanding of the game and the skills I need succeed in the industry. Also, networking opportunities and to learn from experienced professionals.

Do you already have a clear idea of your key coaching philosophies?

Yes, I believe in fostering a supportive environment where players feel comfortable to express themselves and grow. Most importantly, I want to instil love for the game of golf and help my players find joy in their progress. Ultimately, I want to help other players find their love for the game and improve their skills, and to create a positive environment where everyone feels encouraged to grow, whether they are starting out or at a higher level. Seeing my students succeed would be the ultimate reward.

How important have Saleem and Vipingo Ridge been in your journey?

Saleem not only introduced me to golf but also nurtured and mentored me, providing invaluable coaching and advice. Vipingo Ridge was a game-changer too, sponsoring me and providing essential gear like balls, gloves and tees as well as access to the range and golf course for free, plus daily meals. Their support has really helped me grow and develop my skills in the game. It's hard to imagine where I'd be without them.

Saleem on Jacky

I knew from very early on after seeing her hit the ball that Jacky was going to be good – she had a perfect kinematic sequence and every divot was down and slightly to the left.

She was extremely determined but also took the initiative and did things on her own to make things better; she's always had a fantastic work ethic.

The first time I played with her on the course she had a 155-yard shot into a strong breeze from the left side of the first fairway at Vipingo. She hit the most amazing, flighted, piercing shot to pin high and about 12 feet left. I asked what club she hit and she said, '7 iron' ... that’s when I knew she was going to be really good!

She has so much potential as a player, but it is not an easy road especially trying to make it as a player from Africa where there are so few events.

I'm sure Jacky will make a very good coach as she is inquisitive and wants to learn more all the time, and to me that's what makes a good coach: someone willing to keep learning.

Her journey has not always been easy, but she has overcome so many obstacles be it in life or in her golfing career. She has worked hard despite setbacks and that is always what stands people in good stead for success.

I believe Jacky's story will ignite a whole new level of interest in the PGA Programme among young Kenyan women especially.

I want to instil love for the game of golf and help my players find joy in their progress
